The unique Bigar waterfall in the west of Romania
One of the most mysterious, picturesque, unusual and unique natural parts of Romania can be called Bigar waterfall.
The uniqueness of this natural wonder is not in power or impressive height, but in its unusual form. In addition, in 2013, The World Geography magazine published a rating of the Eight Most Amazing Waterfalls of the World, where the Bigar Falls took the first place of honor.
The area where the waterfall lies is called Karash-Severin, which is in the west of Romania, near the town of Bozovic.
The river Minis, flowing here, suddenly encounters an obstacle on its way – a rock made of tufa completely covered with moss, its waters envelop this rock and smoothly flow with silver streams from an 8-meter height again into the river. Flowing water looks like an elegant curtain. Thus, a clear waterfall border is created, and such a cozy grotto is formed inside it. This is the cascade waterfall Bigar. And it all looks fantastically beautiful!
What just do not compare the waterfall! From a distance it looks like a hat of a huge mushroom or a half-closed umbrella or resembles the roof of a house of some fantastic character.
“The miracle of the gorge Minis” was nicknamed by its locals.
Another unique feature of the waterfall is that it is exactly at 45 parallel, half way between the Equator and the North Pole.
The Bigar Falls is part of the Romanian Beusnica National Park, which is visited by a large number of tourists. And of course, Bigar is the most popular place among the majority of visitors who always take pictures next to it and admire the beautiful sight. A wooden bridge is located near the waterfall, and visitors to the park, having climbed it, can better see the waterfall.
It should be noted that in the winter the waterfall is also very beautiful. Frozen water turns into icicles, giving it the appearance of a crystal palace. From here one more name of falls – “Princess”.
Not all waterfalls have legends. But Bigar has a legend that tells that a peasant family lived in this place for a long time and was very sad because she had no children. Grief made my wife turn to a gypsy witch. The witch told the woman that if she drinks water in the spring, she will be able to carry the child. But if a girl is born, she will not have to fall in love, otherwise she will die. Everything happened according to the prophecy of the witch: a woman drank water and gave birth to a girl, and when she became a girl, she fell in love with a guy named Bigăr. To prevent predictions of death and make her forget about the young man, her father locked the girl in a cave. Her screams were heard by a witch who foreshadowed her fate. Approaching the cave, the witch said that she would not be able to free her, but she could stop her suffering and reunite with her lover. Thus, she turned her hair, which was filled with tears, turning into a waterfall. The wind brought to her the young man Bigar, who was drowned in her tears, and their fates were reunited.
