The greatest waterfalls of the Eastern Hemisphere
For the past several thousand years, more precisely 35 thousand years, these waterfalls exist in the United States. We are talking about the Great Falls of the Potomac (Great Falls of the Potomac River) or the Great Falls (Great Falls) – as they are simply called.
This is the greatest waterfalls of the Eastern Hemisphere.
For almost two centuries, the Great Falls are the main attraction of Washington County, only 22 km from the city. It is quite possible to come by taxi.
The waterfalls form a very deep and large mountain river Potomac, it originates in the Appalachians, and the mouth is located on the Piedmont plateau and the Virginia valley, which is 590 km long.
As the geological history of the waterfalls says, the level of the World Ocean has decreased due to the last ice age, and the Potomac River had to cut its course deep on the way to the sea.
On the way from the foothills of Piedmont to the coastal plain of the Atlantic coast, breaking through the strongholds of metamorphic and igneous rocks, consisting of mica, slate and granite, the river formed a system of picturesque waterfalls.
The noise of this powerful chain of waterfalls and rapids of the Potomac River is heard for many kilometers around. Although the waterfalls are small, but here and there they reach a six-meter height with a twenty-meter difference in the height difference between the first and the last rapids. There are just a lot of them, so the feeling is that the river falls down right before our eyes.
The waterfalls area is surrounded by the Great Falls Park in Virginia and the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Historical Park in Maryland, which are located on both sides of the river. Just Park Great Falls and is located on the border between the Piedmont plateau and the plain in Virginia.
These places are very beautiful thanks to the stone beauty: rounded boulders, smooth surfaces of rocks and picturesque depressions. As noted above, the Potomac River made its way, moving to more convenient places, leaving its traces in the ancient channel.
Here the contrast with the jagged rocky surfaces, cliffs with high walls against the background of soft and water-smoothed surfaces is especially noticeable and interesting. All these rocky surfaces are much older than the waters of the river itself.
A large number of tourists and American residents come to admire the power and beauty of these grand streams of the clearest water. Here, on the background of a natural miracle, many are photographed. By the way, outdoor enthusiasts are engaged in popular extreme sports: climbing, kayaking, rafting.
Note that below the waterfalls the river flows through the narrow gorge of Matera, which is full of rapids with a category of difficulty from I to IV, the descent along the dangerous stream is 23 km.
From the stunning power of water rises a lot of spray, so that near the waterfalls there is always a strong fog.
But the most interesting, unusual and rare natural miracle that can be seen on the Great Waterfalls is the lunar rainbow.
On the waterfalls there is a special observation platform from which you can watch the waterfalls. Here you can often see herons sitting on stones and griffon turtles that crawl out to the shore in quiet parts of the reservoir.
Tourists are allowed to have picnics in the vicinity of the waterfall, you can also rent kayaks and bicycles.
